Slick evergreen; made in the shade.
Salal needs rich (think forest floor) soil and sufficient moisture when young. Direct prolonged sun will cause scorch unless you live close to the temperate Pacific Ocean.
Cute, pink, drop-like flowers turn to (technically) edible berries (mealy and un-sweet). Birds love them though.
A great hedge for shady areas and once established, responds splendidly to heavy pruning.
