There is a good chance that a relative of this plant is the namesake to the city of Chicago. The Algonquin word “chigagou” references “wild onion”. Accordingly, humans have long used the fragrant bulbs of Allium cernuum for seasoning and pickling.

Soft, grassy (edible) leaves rise to a pink (edible) flowered cluster that “nods” toward the ground like a shepherd's hook. Propagate it yourself by dividing the bulbs or harvesting its mesmerizing black seeds each summer.

It grows in a variety of conditions, looking its best in small groups. Will need to be maintained if spreading is undesired. Great container plant.
